For this survey of the work of Marc Camille Chaimowicz, we looked at the connection between the museum and its location in the city as a unique host for the artist’s work.

Located on the northern end of Manhattan’s “Museum Mile,” the Jewish Museum sits on Fifth Avenue between Central Park and the Upper East Side’s famous mansions. We designed the exhibition to amplify that negotiation, using a sequence of five galleries to move between a library, a bedroom, and a picturesque pathway through a park. The work of the artist is explicitly domestic and craft-based—media ranging from collage to furniture design to wallpaper—producing environments rich in association that took on new characters woven through the museum. Each gallery demonstrated a different way of seeing and relating to the work, from formal vitrines to informal arrangements; from the scale of the city to an interior to an object.
