As a part of an ongoing series of experiments exploring the use, reuse, and adaptation of industrial agricultural structures, for this project we designed the transformation of a pole-barn structure into private art studios and workshops.

Through the addition of two new volumes built on an existing concrete pad used for animal waste collection, the new structure grows from the old, riffing on its blocky demeanor, its color palette, and its structure. The addition is supported by piggybacking off of the framing of the existing barn, which features over-structured poles atop concrete pile foundations. New framing is inserted between older members, hybridizing an industrial standard with a smaller-scale grain and allowing for robust interior conditioning and spatial subdivision. The green metal siding of the addition echoes the weathered, mint-green barn roof; windows and large garage doors open the studios to views of the surrounding hills and forest.
