Rashaad Newsome: Assembly
2022
The Park Avenue Armory, New York City
Cultural (Completed)
Photography: Michael Vahrenwald/Esto
For this exhibition, we worked with the artist Rashaad Newsome to create a two-part environment: a large gallery for a 40-foot hologram and an auditorium for 350 spectators, structured around moments of inverting the audience’s gaze and expectation.
The Park Avenue Armory’s Drill Hall represents an overwhelming, if not monumentally beautiful space. The design organizes the large gallery and auditorium through layered sightlines—primary, secondary, and tertiary—shaped by dynamic performances. All surfaces are overlaid with a custom vinyl print and dense series of projections, making the inert architecture come to life as a complicit actor in a system of viewing, and asserting a new, if ephemeral, presence in the historic structure.
