As the next iteration of our design-research-build project Testbeds design-research-build project Testbeds, the shed at Success Garden reimagines components of the Brooklyn Public Library’s decommissioned Roadway Readeries.

Roadway Readeries, originally outdoor facilities built during NYC’s pandemic-era outdoor seating boom turn into a new multiuse structure for the Success Community Garden in Brownsville. Designed through close collaboration with local gardeners, and in collaboration with AANDA who designed the readeries, the shed extends the life of these once-temporary structures by embedding them within an active network of community programs.

What began as a vibrant reading room defined by its Yves Klein-blue hue and vaulted wave-like ceiling is reimagined as a modular garden structure that supports reading, resting, food-preparation, and planting. The design process was shaped through ongoing dialogue with local gardeners and community organizers. Ideas emerging from these conversations such as concrete paving for accessibility, convertible flower boxes for food prep, and repurposed bluestone from Central Park were integral to the development of the design.
